SmartLockr turns on automatically
Updated over 2 months ago

Some users might experience the SmartLockr Outlook add-in sometimes turning on by itself without being able to turn it off. This setting is controlled by the admin for SmartLockr within an organization and cannot be set or changed by Smartlockr. SmartLockr has these options available for admins so that they can lower the chance of data leaks and human errors. In this article we will go through some of these settings.

SmartLockr turns on automatically:

SmartLockr can turn on by itself based on the settings that have been made for you by the SmartLockr admin. When SmartLockr switches on automatically it will look something like this:

This behavior comes from settings made by the admin. There are two main reasons SmartLockr can be automatically activated.

SmartLockr turns itself on when certain words or patterns are entered:

An admin can configure SmartLockr to switch on automatically when it recognizes words or patterns. (like social security numbers or bank account numbers). When configuring these settings, the admin will also configure which options (Channel type and authentication) are preferred to lower the chance of a data breach. Two of these content policy settings you will notice as a user:

Automatic: SmartLockr will turn on automatically, but you can still turn SmartLockr off or change the settings in general.

Forced: SmartLockr will turn on automatically, but you can’t turn SmartLockr off or change the settings.

SmartLockr turns on when I add attachments:

The admin can also configure a policy where SmartLockr will automatically turn on when you add attachments to your email. The admin can also enable a policy where we scan the files you add for words and patterns like we mentioned before. With this policy type there are also two settings:

Automatic: SmartLockr will turn on automatically, but you can still turn SmartLockr off or change the settings in general.

Forced: SmartLockr will turn on automatically, but you can’t turn SmartLockr off or change the settings.

If you think the content policies of SmartLockr are too strict or not strict enough, please reach out to the SmartLockr admin within your organization to talk about that topic.
