Microsoft recently released a new version of Outlook that is now publicly available. This new version of Outlook operates differently than the previous one, which means that add-ins like those from Smartlockr no longer work. However, you do not have to switch immediately. Microsoft has announced that it will continue to support the “old” version of Outlook until 2029.
If you are using (or want to use) our SMTP Relay service, you can switch to the new Outlook environment already if you want to do that. We will go through the options that are currently available in this article.
SMTP Relay:
With our SMTP Relay service, you send all your email (or some of them) to Smartlockr so that we can determine whether Smartlockr encryption needs to be applied or not. Behind the scenes, your email server will determine for each email if it needs to be relayed to Smartlockr or not. Because of this, it doesn’t matter where the email comes from and you can send email securely with Smartlockr even without our add-in.
SMTP Relay with split functionality:
Would you rather deliver the email that doesn't have to be encrypted yourself? You can then also use the additional split functionality. With this, we send the email that does not need to be encrypted back to your mail server so that you can deliver it yourself. In this way, all mail can still be checked by Smartlockr so that we can apply our encryption if necessary, but we send it back if it turns out not to be necessary.
Sensitivity Labels:
Microsoft also has a functionality in the form of Sensitivity labels. With these labels, you can, just like with the Smartlockr add-in, indicate in advance which type of channel should be applied to that message. You can publish these labels to a select group or all users. You can also decide not to publish all labels to give the user fewer choices.
The advantage of sensitivity labels is that it works on most Microsoft apps and software. Therefore, you can use this in both the “new” and “old” Outlook and via apps on your phone/tablet.
Can I disable the new Outlook?
Do you want to prevent your users from being able to switch to the new Outlook themselves? You can turn this off as an administrator. More information about can be found here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/clients-and-mobile-in-exchange-online/outlook-on-the-web/enable-disable-employee-access-new-outlook.
If users have already used the new Outlook once, it is already installed on the computer and the user can still use it if desired. You can of course remove this from the computer as an administrator if needed.
