How does the SMTP Relay split feature work?
Updated over 2 months ago

In this article, we will tell how our SMTP Relay split feature works and what you can achieve with it.

Standard SMTP Relay:

If you use our SMTP Relay without split functionality, all emails sent without the Smartlockr plugin will be forwarded to our SMTP Relay. If our plugin is in use, it will add something to the message when Smartlockr is off so that your mail server will deliver it itself.

When our SMTP Relay server receives an email, it will always look inside the email to see if anything triggers a content policy and we need to encrypt the mail and/or attachment(s).

If encryption needs to be applied, we will do this and send a notification email to the recipient(s). If that is not necessary, we deliver the mail as a normal mail to the recipient.

SMTP Relay Split:

If you prefer to deliver the email yourself instead of Smartlockr if it does not need to be encrypted, you can use our SMTP Relay split feature.

The email will still go to our SMTP Relay as is the case with the regular SMTP Relay, the only difference is that we send the mail back to your Exchange server when encryption of the email and/or attachment(s) is not required. This way your Exchange Server can deliver the email to the recipient instead of Smartlockr.

To make this possible, it is necessary to also have a connector in Exchange for incoming emails from Smartlockr. You can ask Support for a script that you can run to add this inbound connector on Exchange Online.

As soon as the inbound connector is created, we can activate the feature for you and it will be active after about an hour.

Below you can find a flow chart for our SMTP Relay split feature:
